Unley Election Wrap Up 2014

Culturally it seems we look at the election results as being one winner out of five or six candidates. The winner gets the glory. Perhaps we should instead think of each of these candidates as finalists? After all, every Australian citizen over 18 is a competitor, in this sport of democratic politics.

So out of a population of thousands we find these five of six who actually have the guts to stand up for something and offer themselves for leadership in our community. They are the only five or six out of thousands who do that. Each of these candidates has done something very special in nominating and in participating. We often ignore them and sometimes ridicule them.

Council elections have an aura of winner takes all. Candidates invest a huge amount of emotional energy in putting themselves forward. The time spent door-knocking, fielding calls, putting up posters and distributing pamphlets with your face on it requires guts in a “tall poppie” culture such as ours.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen any election process that appropriately say “thank you” to all those who didn’t get as many votes. Too often we hear snide remarks about “has-beens” or “also-rans”. We don’t put enough value in acknowledging the efforts of those were not elected.

So I just wanted to say thank you to all the candidates who are not provisionally elected.

Thank you to the candidates from Fullarton Ward; to  Dario Centrella, Megan Fender and Peter Kurtze.

Thank you to the candidates from Goodwood Ward, to Ben Holland and Tom Jones.

Thank you to the candidates from Parkside Ward, to Ian Goodwin-Smith, Ben Pudney and Bruce Holand.

Thank you to the candidates from Unley Park Ward, to Jeff Pudwell, Imelda Lynch and Elizabeth Bleby.

Thank you to the candidates from Unley Ward, to David Ng and Teresa Wieczorek

Your efforts during this election have been exceedingly important in the democratic process and whilst I’m sure you would have loved to win I have no doubt that you will contribute to the community in other meaningful ways.

So whilst the Unley election provided a flurry of activity it ultimately resulted in little change. Indeed all 10 incumbent Councillors who chose to run for another term were reelected. Two Councillors retired at the end of this Council term and they have been replaced by Michael Rabbitt and Luke Smolucha. To view all the reults go to the end of this post.

Congratulations to the returned Councillors and the new councillors.

The previous Council term saw a number of potentially divisive projects handled well at both an elected and administrative level. The Brown Hill and Keswick Creek Stormwater Management Project (that dam issue) and the State Government’s rail electrification project (which some residents found a bit shocking) being the two most difficult. The Unley Oval redevelopment was really not that far behind (it was no place for fence sitters). In each instance the Councillors representing the areas in which those projects occurred industriously communicated between residents, Council and state agencies to help achieve better outcomes.

If anything, the results show (for Elected Members) that the more you communicate to your residents during the term of Council, the better of you will be come election time. The results also show for “newbies” that you need to develop a profile at least a year out from the election.

Ultimately, whilst the official campaign occurs over a 6-8 week window, we are constantly being observed by our neighbours and community.
